Save Monaghan Hospital!!

A crowd of up to 7,000 people gathered on the outskirts of Monaghan town as part of a campaign to secure the future of the local hospital. Members of the Monaghan Community Alliance say the casualty unit in Monaghan is to close - a claim denied by the Health Service Executive. According to the HSE re-structuring will happening, yet we all know that this will ultimately result in closing our hospital! Thus we will have to travel to Cavan, Drogehda and Dublin for emergency services..

Already since the hospital has been off-call many people have died, Joe Walsh the last to be covered my the media, who died as a result of surgeons in Monaghan not being allowed to perform minor surgery due to HSE protocol .. Baby Bronagh Livingstone died because her mother was refused entry to Monaghan hospital had to give birth en-route to Cavan hospital, and there were complications .. and many many more have died and suffered needlessly..
Its disgraceful – as tax payers Monaghan people have as much a right to hospital services as others in the country. Can the HSE not understand that enabling local hospitals provide basic emergency services to their community will ultimately less the pressure on Dublin hospitals.. we are not seeking state of the art services, just basic A&E, before sending patients to specialised hospitals..

Today, the Ceann Chomhairle, Rory O'Hanlon had to be protected by gardaí when he arrived for the official opening of the new Monaghan bypass. The crowd barracked and jeered O'Hanlon and he had to be surrounded by up to eight gardaí as the crowd gathered around him. Rory O'Hanlon is supposedly one of our TD's representing the area (FF). Yet when he was Minister of Health did nothing to help the viability of the hospital, and has yet to support the voice of the people on this issue. Even more annoying is as Ceann Chomhairle, he automatically gets re-elected in the next General Election.

Monaghan has been a very self-sufficient town, with most industry being indigenous family-owned, therefore employment has always been fairly low … However, because of this Monaghan has suffered in national investmnet and development, and also because of the lack of appropriate political voice and representation..

Asking for a brusing but why does the Cavan-Monaghan area population 100,000 or so need two hospitals when most other areas the same size or bigger have only the one? Mayo, Kerry, Clare, Sligo-Leitrim etc.

Agree and we not looking for special treatment - but Cavan hospital isn't able to cope/service adequately their current population/customer base, so how then are they expected to service Monaghan people also? Drogheda hopsital the same..

the overall plan of the HSE is to build a large regional hospital and close all three.. but this won't be in place for 10 years (according to the HSE) - what are we to do until then? .. and even at that - for example, what are people suffering with a heart attack to do, travel 80 miles and then get treated?
..the same plans are in place for hospitals in Roscommon, Ennis, Cashel etc. etc.

Just on the mileage, I think we should focus on the time it takes to travel the distance rather than the mileage itself as 20 miles in one part of the country can take much less than in another part.

Democracy is far too delicate to be left in the hands of the people. It's democracy and the search for votes that allows these out of the way hostpitals to remain open when centralisation and heli supported infrastructure would be the way forward. CLOSE the HOSPITAL - I say

(awaiting bruising)

It isn't lack of support on our part, it is exasperation! Ye elected a 'monaghan hospital' candidate who has supported the government down the line.

And it sounds more like ye should get Cavan sorted out rather than keeping both open.

The people of Monaghan are not looking for a World Class hospital - just basic emergency and medical services.. - what we've always had! ..no more, no less..

With regard to the 'hospital candidate', as far as i'm aware he wasn't supporting FF.. No political party, FF, FG, SF, PD’s or Labour has done anything to save the hospital, hence an independent ran!
And yes Cavan hospital is in more of a mess than Monaghan .. yet they're closing Monaghan down! (Why? because Cavan have a stronger voice politically and have been better served by their representatives!!)

Its time the government listened to the people who elected them! - last week Monaghan people were protesting re. the hospital, in Galway/Mayo people were protesting re. the gas line, in Dublin people were protesting re. a new runway at the airport... and the government just ploughs ahead taking loans and/or gifts and do what they want?

Oddly enough, there is another review of PPARS beign undertaken to clarify the issues involved and the scope it.

The issue are to pay all the people employed in the health service what they are owed, no more, no less, in a timely and accurate fashion, and the scope is those working in the health service. Can I have €30,000 for that?

Connie, Paudge Connolly voted for Bertie as Taoiseach.

Or better yet we could pool some of the health resouces with those further north and make the system more effective in delivering a service to people.

Tis' busy making babies you all should be not hassling old men opening roads!
